SUMMARY:Cultivating Biodiversity: Native Plant Propagation to Support Regional Food Systems with White Buffalo Land Trust
DESCRIPTION:Details:\nBiodiversity is key to a thriving food system. Join White Buffalo Land Trust and the Garden’s Horticultural Educator\, Alejandro Lemus\, to discover how native plants can play a crucial role in supporting the local ecosystem and enhancing crop resilience. Learn the principles and skills needed to propagate native plants on your own landscape and integrate them into your agricultural systems for increased resilience and ecological health. \nYou’ll participate in a variety of seed preparations\, harvest cuttings and prepare them for propagation\, and make root divisions. Through this in-field practicum\, you’ll learn how to support these newly propagated plants through soil mixes\, care\, and repotting. \nCost:\nSliding Scale $175 – $300\nDelicious Lunch is included! Instruction will be in classroom and outdoors. \nAbout Alejandro Lemus:\nAs the Garden’s horticultural educator\, Alejandro develops and implements horticultural education programs for residential gardeners and professional landscapers. Born and raised in Los Angeles\, he has fond memories of helping his family with their landscaping business. Gardening has instilled Alejandro’s appreciation and curiosity for the natural world\, whether pulling weeds or stumbling upon new insect friends. \nAlejandro graduated from the University of California\, Los Angeles with a bachelor’s degree in biology with a focus in ecology and evolutionary biology. He has worked for land trusts\, nature centers\, and native plant nurseries\, advocating California native plants. Alejandro comes to the Garden with experience in habitat restoration\, landscaping\, native plant nursery management\, propagation\, and education. \nAbout White Buffalo Land Trust:\nWhite Buffalo Land Trust practices\, promotes\, and develops systems of regenerative agriculture for local\, regional\, and global impact. \nWe are committed to the evolution of land stewardship and reimagining our food system to address the climate\, biodiversity\, public health\, and food security challenges we face today. \nWith our staff\, partners\, and volunteers\, we engage in direct land stewardship\, education and training programs\, ecological monitoring and research\, and enterprise development.

SUMMARY:Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) Training
DESCRIPTION:“Interested in quantifying the effects of regenerative systems? \nJoin White Buffalo Land Trust for their Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) Course this April 2023. This 5-day training focuses on monitoring ecological outcomes as part of the EOV platform through the Savory Institute and becoming an accredited monitor. Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) is the “science inside” Savory Institute’s Land to Market program. Land to Market (L2M) is a unique sourcing solution that connects conscientious buyers\, brands and retailers directly to farms and ranches that are verified to be regenerating their land. \nThroughout the course\, students will learn how to create a monitoring plan\, conduct short-term monitoring\, establish and read long-term monitoring\, identify and record plant species\, and review data entry and report writing. Whether students have had some monitor training in the past or are new to the EOV monitoring protocol\, anyone who is interested in providing EOV monitoring services must take an accredited EOV monitor training course. Space is limited! \nCost: $1\,500 USD (Includes 3 locally sourced\, delicious meals a day\, instruction\, and materials) \n\n\nUpon registration\, a non-refundable deposit of $500 will be collected to secure your spot in the course. \n\n\nLodging: Tent and car camping is available onsite for $25/night\, and shared cabin stays are available on site for $75/night. The shared cabin stays are on a first-come\, first-serve basis. If onsite cabins fill up\, we do have a partner with offsite cabins that can be reserved for a different cost per night. \nCheck out @white_buffalo_land_trust for more information and to register.”

SUMMARY:"All-Hands-On" Workshop: Nutrient Cycling and Compost Production
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop will introduce you to compost production and nutrient cycling and their role in the larger context of regenerative agriculture. Spaces are limited! Learn more and register. \nWhen: 9am – 4pm on Saturday\, November 5th\nLocation: Jalama Canyon Ranch\nCost: Sliding Scale $150 – $250\n* Delicious Lunch is included! Instruction will be in the classroom and outdoors. \nWhy is nutrient cycling important? It’s the natural process of decomposition and renewal that drives soil fertility. Through the creation and application of compost\, you can build organic matter and microbiology in the soil\, improving its structure and water-holding capacity and sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere. \nTake a deep dive with guest facilitator Dr. David White and the WBLT team into the world of compost production and application. Learn what materials you can use for your compost\, the different processes to create it\, and various ways you can apply it to your landscape to create a thriving\, healthy production system. \nGet Hands-on!\nWe will build compost systems\, analyze soil microbiology\, make compost teas\, and more. Whether you’re tending a backyard garden or broad rangelands\, you’ll leave this course ready to set up nutrient cycling systems of your own with a foundational understanding of what type of compost to apply\, where\, and when.
